ZONTA Club of Swan Hills is doing its bit to help women in developing countries give birth safely.

The group will be making birthing kits at a workshop on May 8 at the Lockridge Hall.

About 1000 kits, which cost about $2 each to make, will be made.

The kits comprise of a sheet of plastic, soap, latex gloves, three pieces of cord, a scalpel blade and some gauze squares in a plastic press-seal bag.

The simple kits can help save lives by reducing the risk of infection during childbirth.

Last year, the kits made by the Swan Hills group were delivered to women in Afghanistan with the help of the Air Force.

Each year, the Zonta Swan Hills club raises money for a number of projects, including the Midland Women’s Health Care Place, Zonta House, the young women in public affairs award, a studies assistance grant, AIDS Council women’s officer, a women’s business scholarship and the woman of achievement award.
