KWINANA Mayor Carol Adams will call on the cities of Rockingham and Cockburn for their support in fighting the proposed move of livestock exports from Fremantle to Kwinana.

Speaking at a recent council meeting in response to questions by a local protest group on whether council would support their fight, Cr Adams said the “noxious trade” was an issue facing the whole area.

“I don’t see this just as a Kwinana issue, it will impact the amenity of people living in Cockburn and Rockingham, and our beautiful coastline,” she said.

The Pastoralists and Graziers Association, and Wellard Rural Exports called for the industry to be moved to the James Point Pty Ltd (JPPL) private port proposal.

“Our focus has been to keep live export from the Town of Kwinana ever since JPPL was first mooted,” Cr Adams said.

City of Cockburn Mayor Logan Howlett said the council had not discussed the issue of livestock export through Kwinana, as a “firm position” was not established.

“As the issue progresses in Kwinana and Fremantle, the City of Cockburn will become more closely involved with discussions on the matter and better placed to make an informed decision,” he said.

“Personally, I can appreciate why the Town of Kwinana and the City of Fremantle have taken their particular stances.”

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the council had previously held concerns and had a number of issues with livestock trade including noise, odour and transport.

He said that view was not necessarily the council’s current position but believed not much would have changed.

Over and above all economic and aesthetic concerns for Kwinana (and they are already considerable), this trade in live animals is at best cruel and barbaric. Halal certified butchers can easily do the work here supplying multicultural Australia with jobs. I too have spent considerable time in the Middle-East and I don't think the argument for a "mobile" food is a good one at all, even if it might have been once upon a time. The Middle-East is one of the wealthiest regions on the planet and although the distribution of this wealth is disparate, poorer out-lying country areas would not even see our sheep let alone be able to afford them. These sheep feed the wealthy Middle-Easterners and they will get them wherever they are cheapest. Both Kwinana and Australia should have more integrity when it comes to what is humanely right and acceptable. This is not acceptable to me and I will vote and fight for this if our leaders wont.

We dont want live sheep being trucked through Kwinana. Ive read much of the local press on this subject and there is a growing ground-swell of opinion that this an outdated and barbaric practice. Our Facebook list is growing - 'No Livestock Exports in Kwinana'.

Lets not confuse the discussion, the point is whether James Point Port is suitable to export livestock instead of Fremantle. My view is it'a a good idea. unlike Fremantle James Point has a buffer between residential areas and the Port. There is a rail connection so less road tranport . The area is not a beach area used by most, not many I think could pin point the place.
As to the argument for not exporting livestock is another matter altogether. Having served in the armed forces in places like Libya, out lying communities do not have access to electricity so no cold storage. The only way to get protein is live stock, killed as required. Mutton is not used or required locally in the ammount available in Australia so helping to feed these communities in my mind is a good thing, have input into the transport conditions is fine to keep them healthy.

For the benefit of other readers, from what point [ jetty] would the sheep be shipped.
And what roads would be accessed by the sheep trucks.
What would concern most residents is the stink,

Good on you Kwinana.

The trade is vile, cruel beyond belief and has been the cause of thousands of job losses in Australia.

The ONLY ones to benefit are the exporters and some of those are Middle Eastern businessmen so where do the profits go?

Australia does not need the reputation of being a cruel nasty animal hating nation it has been given because of live export.
