Compensation call for airport noise

THERE are calls for Perth Airport to compensate local residents for costs resulting from increasing air traffic and airport expansion plans.

Belmont councillor Paul Hitt told last week’s council meeting compensation was often provided in the form of a subsidy to help people soundproof their homes against future increases in air traffic.

“A number of international airports and airport authorities provide some form of compensation to the residents and businesses which lay adjacent or underneath flight paths,” he said.

There has been a 61 per cent increase in air traffic from the airport in the past five years.

In addition, changes introduced last November reduced the airspace required between aircraft, effectively doubling the number of take-offs.

An Air Services Australia spokesman said while some areas east of the airport were concerned about the changes, there was a downward trend in noise complaints overall.

“We believe this is due to a combination of factors including the introduction of more modern, quieter jet aircraft, the use of more precise flight paths and the introduction of procedures which allow aircraft to approach the airport more quietly and over less densely populated areas,” he said.

Just something else I've noticed, since buying the set top box to receive the HD signal, when a plane (Jandakot Planes) flies over it interrupts the signal for a few seconds or sometimes longer, has anybody notice this as well, as its becomng very irritating indeed.

I think this is the point as Mick has stated. We in Ballajura when I moved here 15 years ago were lucky if we had one or two planes go over our houses. Now there are heaps and they are no longer just around midday, they are at any time of the day or night. I think if airports intend to change their pattern of flight paths then they should consult with the residents that are now going to be under the new path and see what the authorities can do to alleviate the discomfort this will cause, you have people who are working night shift, people with young children , people with severe illnessess and all of these people can suffer a bigger disruption to their lives than others. Not everyone would necessarily want compensation but those that wanted to put in place things to reduce the noise should get it.

I'm talking Jandakot Airport (JA) and yes I've lived in Spearwood for years and 15 or so klms from the JA, the noise from these planes, and helicopters is disgusting, I'm not moving as I've stated I've lived here since 1988, yet the noise of planes has increased. Also the Domestic Airport & International Airport has also risen over the years yet I live klms away from both, go figure wonder how many more plane noises do I and everybody have to endure in the comng years, could be deafening. Ken Williams 30/06/09 I'm not moving and I live klms away, yet I still have to put up with ALL Airport traffic whether large or small.

I agree the airport has been there for years but I don't live next to the airport and when I purchased my house I was not in the flight path but the flight path has been moved and now I do have aircraft flying over my house.

there are heaps more planes.I live in the flight path in Cannington.During the night the amount of planes is ridiculous. The South Arrican plane makes my house shudder. And i have shutters on all the windows. There is also the residue of burnt fuel, which falls into my pool and garden.Heaven help those who live closer.

why? you choose to live near and airport you choose to have the noise if you don't want it move! The airport has been there for years!

The airport has been there for ???? years. Why should people be compensated for something that has been there for longer than most of them were born. No-one made them live there! Looks like we're becoming a little America. Get what you can for nothing.
