Two tons in two grades

A SCARBOROUGH batsman made sure his maiden centuries in senior and junior cricket would be remembered by scoring them on the same day.

Marcus Harris (16) scored a total of 247 runs over one Saturday earlier this month, when the WACA club played Claremont-Nedlands.

Gulls coach Simon Bowman congratulated the batsman and said it was a terrific feat of mental strength, particularly for a 16-year-old.

Playing under-17s in the morning at Nedlands’ Melvista Park, Harris hit 13 fours and a six in making 102 from just 85 balls, before retiring.

There was little time for the left-hander to celebrate, as he was required in Scarborough to open the batting for the 2nd Grade, who were chasing 219.

Scarborough collapsed for 95, as paceman Paul Donaldson took 8-51, but he stubbornly top-scored with 36 before being run out.

The home side was forced to bat again, which saw the Kingsley teenager return to the crease, but this time he had better support from teammates. Matt Dieghton (59 not out) shared a big partnership with Harris, who left behind his previous high score of 92 to finally reach three figures.

He was eventually caught for 109 but by then, the threat of outright defeat had faded and he had a chance to put his aching feet up.

Harris participates in the specialist cricket program at Kent St Senior High in Victoria Park.

I watched Marcus Harris make 173* against Fremantle last Saturday. He must be one of the most organised young batsmen I've ever seen and his strokeplay is awesome.

I only hope nothing distracts Marcus from kicking on, playing for WA and then for Australia. The future of Aussie cricket is safe if there is his kind of talent around.
