Weak asylum qualifications

WEST Australians and all the other Australians are not gun-toting rednecks. They do not like being taken for suckers by the interests of the human rights lawyers.

The qualifications for asylum are to be in fear of death or torture by your own government or stateless due to war, like the people of Darfur.

Very few of the people who have come here in boats have been genuine asylum seekers, except the Vietnamese.

None who came over from Indonesia were.

Under international law, once they have landed in a free country, Indonesia, they had achieved asylum.

Following international law, Germany takes no one who has passed through a free country.

Our Immigration Minister has indicated the Sri Lankans are fleeing financial hardship due to the economic crisis.

They are economic migrants. They are not fleeing warfare.

Only repatriation will stop the flow. Not condemnatory rhetoric about people smugglers.

Why are abled-bodied Afghan men coming here and our soldiers fighting their battle?

There is a self-serving argument that immigration creates wealth. Yet a 10-year British Government study has shown the benefit of immigration to Britain has been virtually nil.

The country must be able to pick its immigrants without emotional pressure from those aspiring to the high moral ground.

So HOW MANY do you let in before we get too full?
How many can we afford...remembering there are only a certain number of people who actually pay tax in Australia? And they are getting older and older?
If you want these freeloaders to come how about get them to stay in your house and YOU can feed them? Then you can all hug, sing Kumbaya and feel all happy and warm.
I'd rather my tax payer money was spent on the homelss and needy already here.

It's amazing how the only attack to turning away boat people is the old racist argument.
If you want to be fair and just then why do over a thousand people in Perth have to sleep in the streets, and people who arrive by car from the east have to sleep in their car oh yes of course its their fault, by the by the fact that Rudd wants to tax minning countries has nothing to do with funding Detentions motels sorry centres.
Isnt it enough that we bring most of our food supplies in from overseas and we are not alowed to open a public address with G'day incase we offend some one.
In case your interested I am 4th generation Australian and when our Indiginous people recieve the same treatment as boat people then you will have reason to condem me.

Oh, Allan, I know EXACTLY what you're talking about.

This reactionary, white supremacist filth makes me sick & you & others who share these opinions scare me to death.

Don't worry Northerner, the blinkers will come off eventually and then you'll see clearly what I am trying to explain.

Don't forget to check out the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-3X5hIFXYU site now you hear?

Re the 'economic immigrants' Derek's complaining about: Most of those who left Europe centuries ago for the New Worlds didn't do it because they've made it back home. On the contrary.

Or they were religious fundamentalists.

Considering how little compassion many Australians show towards asylum seekers & refugess I'd say it's them who have no idea how hard life can be. But that doesn't mean that Australia is a paradise, the best country in the world or whatever else one keeps hearing. Only because compared to life in let's say Afghanistan life in Australia is 'free & wonderful' it doesn't mean there is no room for improvement & that it comes out on top if compared to somewhere else. I've been (as a tourist & as a resident) to some places in Europe that are so far ahead on so many things ...

As for 'you ain't seen nothing yet' - apparently approx. 800 of what you'd call 'illegal immigrants' reached Australia last year. That's less than what Italy has to deal with per week. So how much did we see here?

Also, I'm sure like everyone else you oppose some changes & you support others. It's just that you obviously think no-one should have their way but you.

Northerner, I assume from your comments that u have not been to living in parts of the world where life is not as “easy” as here. We have a “free and wonderful life” with many people coming to share it. We are lucky to have the support of Social Security. In many countries it’s “sink or swim”. Many aspects of life here are not available elsewhere. Having been overseas and seen the changes happening & now accelerating in the world with changing demographics I can see where Australia is heading. In time we will have the same problems as overseas. I work with immigrants who are contributing to and enjoying the life without wanting to change it and are happy along with us. Others bring "baggage", imposing their agendas on us. Howard handled the situation badly but it slowed the flood. We must keep out people who want to change our way of life. Again, check out site to see what we are talking about. What is currently seen as a small problem but ‘you ain’t seen nothing yet”.

Australia the only country that doesn't send people back home? Allan, where did you get this idea from? Australians really have to get some perspective on their country and the rest of the world...

Wonderful and free life? I have the quiet suspition that there are some people out there who wouldn't call their life wonderful. But I guess they have no-one to blame but themselves, isn't that so?

John Howard's policies on immigration were nothing short of racist.

"Immigration is our enemy not our saviour." I presume, that you're an immigrant or a descendant of immigrants? So much insight....

I agree with Commonsence. I have viewed the U-tube address he gave and it is truely frightening. Immigration is our enemy not our saviour. The situation is in UK/Europe is probably irreversible with regards to immigration but here we have the opportunity to, at least, postpone the inevitable. The Rudd Government needs to be much stronger. There is one thing you can say about Howard - he was strong on keeping uninvited people out of Australia. Australia is at the bottom of the chain and everyone above is more than happy to pass these people through to us knowing that we will not send them back where they belong. If these people are refugees how do they afford the amount of money demanded to get them here unlawfully?? Lisa, you really need to check out this web site (give by Commonsence) and take the blinkers off. It should convince you that our children or our grandchildren will not be enjoying the wonderful free life we enjoy today!!

It never ceases to amaze me how keen those who didn't do anything to get to where they are (they were simply lucky enough to be born in one place instead of the other) to prevent other, less lucky people from getting a little share of what they enjoy with such unwarranted feeling of entitlement....

A person who applauds the politics of the current Italian government says more than enough about their (in)humanity.

(Although I wonder if they would suggest to the Victorian bushfires survivors that they should enjoy their 'camping'?)

wow "commonsense" or should I say sick sense, what a horrendously callous attitude to adopt to those who have already suffered so much.

It always amazes me that people like you who are the first to rail against unfortunates seeking asylum here are deafeningly silent when millions of our tax dollars are spent on rescuing rich fatcat yachties/boaties who get themselves in grief on the high seas.

We should do what Italy did recently...sent a boat load back to where they came from. If we do this enough times they will soon get the message and stay away.
Untill our government have the guts to do this they will keep coming. But I guess they are considered as potential voters for the power that allows them in.

"Very few of the people who have come here in boats have been genuine asylum seekers, except the Vietnamese. None who came over from Indonesia were."

Derek, on what data do you base the above suggestions? Sounds to me like it's just your own reactionary views.

Those keen to provide refuge to asylum seekers do not "aspire to the high moral ground" as you so crudely put it. They simply believe in equity.

As a Western Australian, I am appalled by the first line of your letter, in that that you would presume to speak for me in your reactionary ranting.
