IN planning a holiday schedule with my daughter we had pencilled in a visit to both the WA Art Gallery and the Museum.
It was with disbelief that I found out both were closed on alternate days.
This has got to be the most ridiculous cost-cutting measure made by the Government.
How can it justify any reduction in opening hours of public institutions such as the gallery and museum?
In recent times there has been a big push by the Government to increase shopping hours.
A lot of effort has been put in by the Government and the private sector to convince us that increased shopping hours would be a good thing for all concerned.
It’s a shame that the same effort is not applied when dealing with the arts.
Why is it that the Government does not see the arts as an important part of city life?
Why does it choose to reduce the community’s access to it, but on the other hand it allows the city to be open for seven days of shop trading.
Once again the almighty dollar is a benchmark on how we make decisions.
The art gallery and the museum belong to the people of Western Australia and there should be seven-day access to them by all who live in and visit this State.
